Wheeler ENTERING 2nd GRADE Summer Reading 2015

1. Read The Magic Tree House: Pilgrims by Mary Pope Osborne.

All second grade students are required to read chapters 1 – 3 from Pilgrims, by Mary Pope Osborne and Natalie Pope Boyce. They can read the chapters by themselves, or as a read-aloud with an adult. This book lays the foundation for our fall social studies unit and will give students a chance to become familiar with the Pilgrims’ journey to the New World. Students will be required to bring this book to school in September.

2. Read any two (2) books:

Any book from the Time Warp Trio series by Jon Scieszka
The Time Warp Trio is a book series written by Jon Scieszka and illustrated by Lane Smith and later by Adam McCauley, which chronicles the adventures of three boys - Joe, Sam, and Fred - who travel through time and space with the aid of the mysterious Book.
Any book from the Ivy and Bean series. by Annie Barrows
When seven-year-old Bean plays a mean trick on her sister, she finds unexpected support for her antics from Ivy, the new neighbor, who is less boring than Bean first suspected.
Any book from the Mercy Watson series. by Kate DiCamillo
Mercy Watson is a series of chapter books written by Kate DiCamillo and illustrated by Chris Van Dusen. Mercy Watson is also the fictional pig who stars in the series.
Any book from the Pinky and Rex series by James Howe
Close neighbors and best friends, Pinky and Rex have been delighting newly independent readers and defying conventional gender stereotypes ever since their first adventure appeared in 1990. Pinky is a boy who loves to collect stuffed animals and whose favorite color is pink. Rex is a sports-crazy girl who is passionate about dinosaurs.
Penny and Her Song by Kevin Henkes
Penny comes home from school eager to share her very own song, but must wait until the time is right to teach it to her parents and the babies.
Aggie and Ben by Lori Ries
After choosing a new dog, Ben describes what the pet Aggie can do and should not do around the house.
Harvesting Hope by Kathleen Krull

Any book from the Cowgirl Kate and Cocoa series. by Erica Silverman
Cowgirl Kate and her best friend Cocoa are as feisty as ever as they play hide-and-seek, get new shoes, and learn the true meaning of friendship. They're partners through thick and thin, and partners do "everything" together.
Any book in the Henry and Mudge series. by Cynthia Rylant
The stories revolve around a young boy, Henry, and his canine companion, Mudge, an English Mastiff. Throughout the series, Henry learns many lessons, usually with the help of the 182-pound Mudge, about life, loyalty and love. He has a cousin named Annie.
