Catlin & Scholder

Fritz Scholder is a Native American artist and painter from Minnesota. Compare and contrast one of Scholder’s paintings with a work of George Catlin, an American painter, who traveled west many times in the mid-19th century to capture the lives of the natives on his canvas. Use your comparison of the visual images to examine the following questions: How do the very different perspectives of Scholder and Catlin affect the artwork and the depictions of the Native Americans from each man? And how might these different perspectives help us understand the history of native peoples in the American west?
